TEACHING, MENTOR-SHIP,  SUPPLIES  Classic training with impression of Reality

Take your work to another level.  The focus will be on crafting works from plain-air (outdoors and in) studies, photos or life setups.

Develop a fully-rounded conception of a painting. A great deal of emphasis will be placed on all the 7 perspectives:

light movement, color, tone, value, edges, grays, linear perspectives and the meaning of simplicity.  Emphasis will also be placed on what happens to these perspectives in light and in shadows.

Supply list

BRING SUPPLIES YOU HAVE

or what is thrifty for you

EASELS are supplied in class

if we go outdoors to paint (PleinAir)

I suggest an OUTDOOR FRENCH EASEL 1/2 SIZE

I encourage everyone to have one for home

to use indoors as well.

I use the same supply list and pallet of colors for all

painting: landscape, portrait, still life etc.

please check all suppliers online for affordable prices and compare

the prices and availability to Hobby Lobby &.

Michael's and hardware stores Walmart carry supplies

that are just OK. student brand paints are 1/2 filler 1/2 pigment.

student brands are great when you are beginning your learning

I usually resort to Jerry's Artarama.  I study their online offers,

I order catalogs but then I call to give the order and I know

for sure that the items are in inventory.

Using a photo which is chemical colors does not inform you on your choice that your own eyes see

You wind up copying the chemical colors that represent

natural color instead of studying the millions of hues

and colors and transitions from life study.  The eye can

see so much more than limited ink on a photo. Also when you copy you are not really learning.  you are fixed rather than having options that trigger your mind and spirit. We want to open not be fixed....We want to expand beyond the specific

For learning, Still Life is best, easiest for both myself and student

to communicate what we observe.

For class  or workshop, keeping it simple shapes, bring a simple

personal setup of 3 objects

of different size. consider shapes, texture and color and

perhaps bring cloth for a back drop, a  muted background

color. Background means in the back, colorful comes

forward yellow comes most forward.

Giving a 3d life to your painting becomes easier when

a setup has personal meaning.  You will learn to be the architect of your painting.

You will paint your story, produce, direct, choreograph and communicate your

concept:  Your own story on canvas, your

own feelings of interest, love, opinion, etc. you will develop your own personal

style.

A cardboard box to fit your setup in will give you a stage for your

play, also makes it easier to carry stuff.

Student grade brands have fillers and in time colors and

tones fade or change.  It's discouraging to put your

energy into something that dries without luster and has

mediocre finish.  Winton is a student brand.  I have been

using Gamblin, Windsor Newton and others.  They

are pricy but if  you love the process it's worth it.  I suggest

you always get the best that you can afford you are spending

your time

which is worth it.

Essential Oil Paint colors are the primary colors:

red, yellow, blue plus black and white (bring what you

have or what's thrifty for you.

I find I use the following colors and sometimes add and

take away.  In time with experience and experiment you

will find colors that are personal to you.

Colors marked with stars  are the essentials for class:

Permalba White Large Tube*

Cadmium Yellow Light*

Cadmium Yellow Medium*

Cadmium Yellow Deep

Cadmium Orange*

Cadmium Red Light*

Cadmium Red Medium*

Alizarin Crimson*

Permanent Rose

Dioxazine Purple (dizzy purple)

Manganese Blue or Cerulean Blue*

Cobalt Blue

Ultramarine Blue*

Ivory Black

GREENS: OPTIONAL you can make your own

beautiful greens by mixing different blues with yellow, orange,

red or purple (some greens SAP GREEN, viridian green,

thalo green, light greens, permanent green)

A steel Pallet knife SHAPED like a bent handle trowel

BRUSHES

bristol hair for oil:  I use mostly Robert Simmons Bristol Filberts

a small one for detail #1-3 #5 is my average size #8 is good

#1,2,3,5, and #8 I experiment with different sizes and hairs

fan brush, brights, flats, chisel

I use soft sable #8 #12 and a thin signing brush size 0 or 00 or 1

I love mongoose brushes

Natural Brushes hold more paint but synthetics are great as the painting progresses

PALLET

12x16 can be wood, plastic, Lucite, paper, glass

(Stephen Quiller brand of gray paper pallet pad that I use

for quick cleanup but glass 1/4 to 1/2 inch tempered glass

cleans very easily. I had glass shop cut my pallet to fit my

pallet box and they notched out 2 corners for finger

space for ease of lifting out of my box.

OIL & TURP (oderless) DOUBLE CLIP ON pallet cups to hold oil and

odorless turps or mineral spirits. Mine is only 1/2 inch deep,

funny that an anchovy can works well, with tape on the underside

Masterson pallet holder box is like Tupperware.  I have mine

for many years.  It helps me keep paint fresh for days and

weeks and keeps my car and studio clean

I sometimes put it in the frig......

Small cold pressed linseed Oil

Turpenoid in blue can (no turpentine please)

CANVASES 16x20 or your choice

Paper towels/rags (bounty) Hand wipes, table cover

OPTIONS: ruler, camera, iPad is great to set your photo on, tablet, iphone, pencil for

notes, record, set it on and forget it.  Taking notes distracts

listening and seeing.
